February 10-14, 2025 | All Elementary Schools
This February, all five Upper Arlington Elementary Schools had the pleasure of welcoming New York Times bestselling children's author Aaron Reynolds for a day of creativity and inspiration. Known for his engaging and humorous books including Dude!, Creepy Carrots!, Creepy Pair of Underwear!, Nerdy Birdy and many more, Mr. Reynolds' work resonates with readers of all ages and has become a key part of students’ pleasure and curricular reading across the district. His diverse collection of fiction, spanning from kindergarten to fifth grade, provides countless opportunities for our elementary students to develop a deeper love for literacy.
This author visit was made possible through a collaboration between UA+Ed Foundation and the elementary PTOs, bringing a grant-funded experience aimed at nurturing a passion for reading and writing among our 3,000 primary students. Mr. Reynolds tailored his presentations for each grade level, focusing on important themes of authenticity, resilience, and the power of self-expression.
The Story Behind the Grant
Leading up to the visit, students participated in collaborative activities with media specialists and classroom teachers. Each media specialist worked closely with students and staff to explore Aaron Reynolds' books, highlighting specific titles that resonated with the unique cultures of their schools and classrooms.
The integration of Upper Arlington’s 1-to-1 technology initiative was key in empowering students to make meaningful connections with the author and his works. Using their iPads, students created their own books inspired by Mr. Reynolds' style, produced videos for their peers, and embarked on creative, self-directed projects in preparation for the visit. Media specialists facilitated these digital activities, ensuring they aligned with grade-level learning goals and the broader school curriculum.
Through this grant, students not only read and engaged with books, but also honed skills across multiple disciplines, connecting literacy with technology and creativity.
Creating Lasting Impressions
“While the visit itself will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the learning opportunities before and after the event will empower our students to envision themselves as future authors. Connecting with a beloved author is a memorable experience for any young reader, and this visit will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on all members of our elementary school reading communities," said Media Specialist, Kristin Bugnitz.
This special day brought to life the joy of reading and writing in a way that will resonate for years to come, fostering a lifelong love of books and the creative possibilities they offer.
