Ms. Hughes and Mr. William’s math class at Wickliffe Progressive Elementary School are proving that numbers are more than just figures on a page. They are the building blocks of critical thinking, innovation, and real-world problem-solving. Under the guidance of these dedicated educators, students are not just learning equations but are also developing the skills necessary to navigate the challenges of tomorrow.
The Story Behind the Grant
This year, the class brought all of their mathematical learnings to life by planning and designing a bird-watching data collection center. Students designed and built the center after measuring to calculate the amount of mulch needed, and estimating the lumber and costs to build a two-tier trellis to hang 12 feeders. They even included a water feature and selected native plants, such as coneflowers, berry bushes, and trumpet vines, to attract and feed local birds, thereby transforming their lessons into a hands-on environmental project.
"Our goal is to make math both accessible and exciting for every student," said Ms. Hughes. "We want them to see the power and potential of mathematics in their daily lives."
This project was made possible through a grant written by Ms. Hughes to the UA Education
Foundation, which generously funded the initiative. The teachers also collaborated closely with district administration and the City of Upper Arlington to secure the necessary clearances for adding these structures to school property, ensuring a lasting and meaningful impact on both students and the local environment.
Creating Lasting Impressions
In an era when schools across the state are being asked to adopt increasingly scripted
curricula, projects like this one reflect the essence of what makes Wickliffe Progressive
Elementary School unique. Hands-on, project-based learning is not just an enrichment
opportunity. It is a fundamental component of a progressive education. These experiences
empower students to think critically, work collaboratively, and apply their learning in meaningful ways that connect directly to the world around them.
"We emphasize creative thinking, collaboration, and perseverance. Skills that are crucial in both academics and life," added Mr. William.
