UA+Ed was pleased to partner with the Greensview PTO to help fund an inclusive playground addition project which was completed this spring. The new addition offers a 360 degree slide, multiple climbing handles & bars, textured surfaces and a low profile accessible spinner. Such structures create easier access for students with disabilities, mobility and sensory needs. Sensory-rich elements and ground level play help ensure safe and meaningful participation. As the Greensview PTO noted,
Recess is an escape for all kids. There should not be limitations to what kids can do or who they can play with. This inclusive playground addition is awesome because it means every Greensview kid can join in on the fun - climbing, spinning, exploring and playing together!
The inclusive playground addition has, in reality, benefitted all Greensview students. Olive L. said the 360 degree slide is one of the most popular new additions. She noted “stairs can be hard for some students so the ramp is nice.” Harper S. said she loved the “different levels of options that are good for all age groups,” while Sloane N. explained that the new structures feel more inclusive saying they are a “great replacement to what was there before because we can get more people on it.” These 5th graders all noted that students with disabilities and kindergarteners often get priority on the new structures which all agreed felt like a fair and equitable use of the structures.
While the inclusive playground addition enhances the play experience for Greensview students, it also benefits the Upper Arlington Community as a whole. School buildings may be quieter during the summer months, but playgrounds continue to get plenty of use by both school aged and pre-school aged children. With Greensview’s long time tradition of hosting the City of Upper Arlington’s Safety Town, the new inclusive playground additions add meaningful and safe play experiences for our community’s youngest Golden Bears.
