One of the ways UA+Ed enhances learning across Upper Arlington Schools is by funding grants that bring innovative experiences, expert resources, and real-world opportunities directly into classrooms. These grants help teachers elevate learning in ways that inspire creativity, deepen engagement, and expand what's possible for students.

A recent example is Personal Legend Comics, a project led by UAHS art teacher Corey Aumiller. Through UA+Ed grant funding, professional comic artist and educator Dan Gerdeman visited Upper Arlington High School, allowing approximately 60 Honors, Honors Advanced, and AP Drawing students to learn from a published comic illustrator.

During his February 2026 visit, Gerdeman guided students in transforming personal experiences into autobiographical comics, helping them discover their unique voices through visual storytelling. Students created works inspired by everything from everyday frustrations to meaningful life moments, learning how to turn their own stories into compelling art.

Students were energized by Gerdeman's enthusiasm and expertise. Sophomore Tola T. shared, “Gerdy came in with so much energy. He had all great things to say about art and was very positive.” Senior Evie J. found additional inspiration in learning that Gerdeman had once been Mr. Aumiller's own high school teacher.

For Emmy A., the project connected directly to a childhood love of graphic novels. “Seeing it all come together and how everyone interpreted it was amazing,” she shared. “As a kid, I loved graphic novels and comics. This is what my younger self would’ve been excited about.”

UA+Ed's grant also provided each student with a copy of the published "zine-style" comic book featuring a collection of all the works. “It’s so cool as a high schooler to be a published illustrator,” said Tola T. “Such a unique experience.” Evie J. added that she was grateful to UA+Ed for supporting this initiative because, “Experiences like this make our school stand out, and students really appreciate the extra opportunities provided.”

Projects like Personal Legend Comics are possible thanks to generous supporters of UA+Ed who further the foundation’s mission to provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that help students explore their passions, build confidence, and see new possibilities for their future. Congratulations to these 60 UAHS students—now officially published authors and illustrators!

The Personal Legend Comic Book is available for purchase at Storyline Bookshop in Upper Arlington. Proceeds from sales will fund future meaningful opportunities for students.
