UA+Ed was pleased to support a visit from Modern Pop Artist Michael Albert to Greensview Elementary this Spring. Albert is a celebrated artist known for his innovative, creative and whimsical art. Albert presented his story to the entire school about his journey of becoming an artist complete with photos of some of his very first drawings and pieces. In addition, he explained his commitment to sustainability as an artist.
Albert’s unique style of using everyday materials aligns with his recycling philosophy in order to create his signature line of artwork known as Cerealism - collage style pieces using iconic consumer brand packaging. His art takes on a new sustainable, cut and paste approach to the traditional Andy Warhol style of Pop Art. Creating Cerealism style artwork encourages student artists to explore and see old things in a new light.
In his two days at Greensview, Albert was able to work with all Greensview students to create their own piece of Pop Art. Students brought in cardboard consumer packaging in the days leading up to this visit. With guidance and encouragement, each student explored their creativity by cutting, arranging and pasting recycled materials into original compositions. The activity emphasized that there is no single “right way” to make art—each piece reflected the individuality of its creator. Greensview Art teacher, Jana Holland, reflected on the visit saying, “We had the best two days with Michael. His art is so accessible to all students. Each and every student found success and created their own collage inspired by his ‘cerealism.’”
Students felt empowered to express themselves and gained a new appreciation for both art and sustainability. Greensview 5th grader Emma H. was inspired by the new technique, "Michael Albert explained a new style of art that we didn’t know existed and now we can do that!” Kindergartener, Agnes B., loved the creativity that was innate in Albert’s style. Agnes said, “I like that there were lots of different cereal boxes. You can just use anything random! You can make anything! Just use your imagination.” The students' collages are currently on display at Greensview in the showcase and down the art hallway.
Throughout the 2025-26 school year, UA+Ed has funded over 20 grants that support the visual and performing arts. We currently have 12 endowment funds and two scholarships specifically dedicated to the arts. Meaningful visits by artists like Michael Albert will impact students for years to come. Reuse, recycle and create! Albert even created a unique UA+Ed-inspired piece which is on display in the Foundation Room on Golden Bear Boulevard.
